Comparison Kills
This past week has been filled with so many wonderful things and my heart is indeed filled with gratitude. While reflecting on the most recent events, I noticed an unwelcome guest attempting to take a seat at my table. My thoughts began to shift and it was as if all the blessings occurring in my life were starting to lose their luster. I found myself looking at people my age and comparing life to their lives. They are married or they have children (all things I desire) - and the list goes on. Then God spoke. In a loving and tender way, He reminded me that comparison is a thief. It steals joy. It caused my focus to be on the wrong thing. It is a distraction. I was thankful for the gentle rebuke.
We have all heard the phrase, “Stay in your lane.” At times, it can be perceived in a negative sense to imply your skills or abilities only warrant you remaining in a specific place, never to move forward. However, I have come to learn “staying in your lane” actually is the best thing to do. Like for real, stay in your lane. What you were created to do is unique to you. There is a distinct path that God has for you and when you veer off of it, it can set you back or even lead you in the wrong direction. Comparison will always get you off track. How can you successfully run your race if you are looking to your left or right?
I have learned comparison likes to bring along its companions named jealousy, envy, and covetousness. When I recognize I have given ear to their storyline, I know it is time for a heart check with the Lord. I start asking myself questions like:
“Why am I feeling this way? Where is this coming from?”
I ask the Lord to heal any broken areas in me that are impacting my perspective of myself and Him. When we believe the lies that comparison speaks, it is as if we are telling God what He is doing in our lives is not enough. When God created you, He had a detailed, calculated plan in mind so to infer He messed up is ludicrous.
I want to encourage you to do a heart check. Has comparison, envy, or jealousy crept into your heart? Allow God to speak to you and heal the broken places in your heart.
A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones. Proverbs 14:30
